Novel approaches for assessment of symptoms, affect and functional status in patients with Atrial Fibrillation
We are building a multidimensional database using digital tools and wearable sensors to assess symptoms, affect and functional status in patients with atrial fibrillation.
STORY
Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most prevalent, major arrhythmia in the United States. It leads to an increased risk of stroke, heart failure, and overall mortality. Our understanding of AF is hampered by the dominant assessment paradigm, where symptoms and heart rhythm are measured at a single point in time. This “static” snapshot does not capture the daily variability of symptoms and heart rhythm and does not shed light on their potentially complex relationship.
SOLUTION
We are building a multidimensional database of patients with AF using digital health tools including mobile application, continuous heart rhythm recorder, accelerometer data combined with comprehensive baseline clinical and psychological assessment of ratings during multiple occasions in a day for three weeks. We plan to examine the relationship between heart rhythm, affect, functional status as well as explore novel digital biomarkers specific for patients with AF.
RESULTS
We have shown significant variability in reporting of symptoms and affect in patients with atrial fibrillation. There are novel digital biomarkers that can be used as potential targets for therapy in patients with AF.
